Mayday Project

The Mayday project is a series of 1 minute audio and video sketches that are compact, self-contained, yet interrelated works that share common themes and visual aesthetics. The goal was to create an entire piece each day for the month of May, 2019 within 24 hours using nothing but iPhone audio and video apps.

I chose 1 minute because of the limit imposed by Instagram. The work is conceptual in the sense that outlines, frameworks, aesthetic goals, samples and appropriated media were prepared prior to making the work on my iPhone over the course of a day (sometimes longer).

The Mayday Project is music made on a phone to be viewed on a phone, but also suitable for larger playback devices. The pieces are all fast sketches of longer pieces to be realized later when all the project files are exported from my phone to desktop DAW software such as Abelton, Max MSP, After Effects, and Premiere where the compositions can be mixed and mastered under proper studio equipment.

The longer finished pieces can be preformed with a DJ controller and additional midi synthesizers, controllers (Push2) & instruments with a backline video projection to run the visuals. The work can also be shown as video art on monitors or on video projection without being performed lived.

Apps that I used to create the music videos on my iPhone are Auxy, Synth One, Kola, Audio Share, Audiobus 3, Garage Band, iMovie, Spectrum, Stella, and Rush.
